The Dextra large-scale facility is located at the NZP New Zealand site where a range of bulk pharmaceutical intermediates and drug substances are manufactured.

Background to NZP
New Zealand Pharmaceuticals Ltd (NZP) was established in 1971 to extract and purify biochemicals from by-products of the New Zealand meat processing industry. In the 1980s the product range broadened to include a variety of other biochemicals, especially biopolymers, extracted from natural sources.
In recent years, NZP’s integrated cGMP manufacturing capability expanded into the chemical synthesis of carbohydrate and bile acid derivatives and other novel compounds with therapeutic potential.
In 2005, the private equity firm, Direct Capital www.directcapital.co.nz, purchased a 51% share of NZP. Dextra was acquired in 2009.
Owing to a strong demand for derivatives of NZP’s bile acids and a range of carbohydrates, the Company developed synthesis capability. This capability was fully realised with the opening of a dedicated synthesis facility in 2007.
NZP is situated near the city of Palmerston North in the North Island of New Zealand. The city is home to New Zealand's largest university (Massey University) and New Zealand's largest concentration of life sciences and agricultural research.
